Melanie Silva, HBMus , BEd
Melanie currently teaches music for the Halton Catholic District School Board & is the recipient of the Ontario College of Teachers 2014 Public Confidence Award. The award honours an individual, group, agency or institution that strives to strengthen public confidence in education and embeds the teaching profession's ethic of care, trust, respect and integrity.
Melanie has directed many successful concert bands, choirs, and show choirs earning first place awards, scholarships & best vocal recognition from various music festivals. She receives high accolades from industry experts for her teaching, choreography and staging. She directed St Peter Elementary School Glee, winning Show Choir Canada's national junior title in 2013, 2014 & 2015.
She grew up on the competitive dance circuit gaining expertise in various disciplines including tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical and contemporary. Melanie has been playing piano since the age of four earning countless awards and scholarships throughout the years. She has studied with Gloria Saarinen and Elaine Lau at Wilfrid Laurier University. She is a frequent accompanist for school and church choirs, voice recitals, ballet exams and is also an accomplished flutist. The arts have provided Melanie with the opportunity to travel throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.
In addition to a full time teaching career Melanie continues her graduate studies at Wilfrid Laurier University where she is completing a Master of Arts in Community Music with plans to continue with a PhD.
She is pleased to play a part in introducing show choir to the young people of Milton!
